The temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw to the skull. Symptoms around the jaw can have different causes, so assessment begins with the patient’s history and clinical examination.

Choosing an imaging method

Different imaging methods answer different questions. CBCT is useful for evaluating bony anatomy, while other examinations may be more appropriate when the question concerns soft tissues such as the articular disc.

Discuss symptoms with a clinician

Imaging findings should be correlated with symptoms and examination findings. A scan alone does not establish the cause of every jaw symptom.
